Meanwhile, President Trump claims the Strait is completely open, yet he insists on maintaining a U.S. blockade on Iranian ports. He believes this blockade is enough to force the Iranian government to hand over its enriched uranium to the U.S. Interestingly, reports from maritime experts and oil analysts on CNBC indicate that ships attempting to pass through the Strait near Iranian ports have been reversing course rather than proceeding. While there are no confirmed reasons yet, I suspect the crews realize it is simply too risky. If the deal falls through, Iranian troops could seize ships instantly, or a ship could strike a mine, causing massive damage.\n\nIt’s a puzzling situation, and it appears Trump’s statement might not be entirely accurate. I don't believe Iran would give up its nuclear developments without a significant deal, as those have been the government's primary goal. I think it’s possible Iran may hand over enriched uranium only if the U.S. vows to unfreeze $20 billion in Iranian assets. The core of this peace deal will inevitably be about nuclear developments as the escalation first began because the U.S. wants that uranium, and Iran wants to keep it. While the deal may take time, we are at least making progress, and I remain optimistic for the coming weeks.\n\nThe market is also booming because futures traders have flipped the probability of a 25-basis point rate cut by the end of the year from 20% to nearly 40%. It is now a coin toss whether rates will stay the same or see a cut in 2026. Interestingly, Fed governor Christopher Waller’s recent speech suggested that future rates depend on Middle East escalation, which conflicts with Fed Chair Powell’s speech at Harvard a few weeks ago. Powell argued that escalation wouldn’t matter because oil prices are already priced in. My take is that while escalation isn't the only factor, it heavily impacts inflation reports like PCE and CPI via oil prices.\n\nFinally, we had two crucial earnings reports from Netflix and TSM. TSM reported a surge in profits and AI demand, as expected. However, Netflix provided a surprise: co-founder and chairperson Reed Hastings will step down in June. This has spooked investors who wonder if his departure is linked to Netflix’s future downsides, such as the failed Warner Bros. bid and recent price hikes across all tiers.
